Free to be Me
While the question of “free will” takes up a fair amount of energy and thought in scientific, spiritual and philosophical quarters, I have never understood how there can be any doubt. To be able to ask the question–“Is there free will?”–is to assume the existence of free will as the question itself, as all questions, requires the possibility of answering. In fairness, that freedom may be more limited for some than others depending on the context–Babe Ruth may have been a Hall of Fame baseball player, but he could not have chosen to be as successful a jockey–and there are ways we can increase our level of freedom. Knowledge is indeed power–and the very awareness of our freedom is, well, in itself quite empowering.
